The proposal for a dedicated day to celebrate yoga was introduced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2014. He emphasized yoga’s holistic approach to health and well being, calling it a “gift from India to the world.”

The UN declared June 21st as International Yoga Day, as it is the summer solstice the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere symbolizing light, energy, and transformation.
